Indianapolis Slips Past Saints by Identical 5-4 Scores

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 St. Louis - The softball squad battled Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division leader Indianapolis to the end but the visiting Greyhounds swept a doubleheader by identical 5-4 scores in both games. The Greyhounds stretched their winning streak to 14 straight.

In game one, the Greyhounds took an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the first and added a single tally in the third. The Saints answered with three straight to tie the game. Shelby Steinkamp walked with the bases loaded to force in Maryville's first run in the fourth inning. The next batter, Jennifer Maynez, was hit by a pitch as the Saints closed to 3-2. In the fifth, Karlie Twisselman singled and was bunted over to second. She stole third and the throw to try and nail her at the base sailed into left as Twisselman scored to tie the game. Indianapolis retook the lead on a sac fly, and a subsequent error allowed a second run to score for a 5-3 lead. The run would prove to be pivotal as Danni Wydra blasted a solo homer as Maryville closed to 5-4 in the sixth. Meredith Brown led off the seventh when she reached on an error. Twisselman put down a sac bunt, but the Saints stranded Brown in scoring position to end the game.

After Indianapolis scored a run in the top of the first inning in game two, Alex Flasch launched a two-run homer to hand the Saints their first lead of the day. In the third, the Saints loaded the bases, and Wydra's fielder's choice plated a run for a 3-1 cushion. However, the Greyhounds jumped back in front when Taylor Russell hit a grand slam for a 5-3 advantage for the visitors. Maryville got a run back in the fifth when Flasch walked and was sacrificed over to second. Ashley Marks smashed a double down the line in left to pull the Saints to 5-4, but that would be Maryville's last base runner of the day as the Greyhounds (27-7, 18-2 GLVC) held on for the win.

The Saints slip to 12-20 overall, 8-12 in the GLVC. Maryville is back in action Wednesday, April 16 when they host Harris-Stowe for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
