Marks and Wydra Key Softball Sweep at Southern Indiana

Evansville, Ind. - Ashley Marks doubled with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to boost Maryville to a thrilling 6-5 victory in the first game at Southern Indiana. Danni Wydra hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs as the Saints completed the doubleheader sweep with a 7-2 triumph.

Host USI jumped on top with three runs in the bottom of the second. The Saints got two runs back in the top of the third when Nicole Taylor and Alex Flasch hit solo homers to trim the deficit to 3-2. The Screaming Eagles rebuilt their lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-2 lead before the Saints had a late rally.

Kelsey Kapitzke started the rally with a single, and Jennifer Maynez followed with a hit to put two aboard. Shelby Steinkamp singled to load the bases. The Saints were down to their final out but Wydra singled to score a run to pull to 5-3. With the bases still loaded, Marks drilled a double to the gap in left center to clear the bases for a 6-5 lead. USI pushed two runners into scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but Kapitzke got the final out of the game to pick up her third win of the season.

The Saints scored two runs in the top of the first when Wydra smashed a two-run homer to left field. The Screaming Eagles tallied an unearned run in the bottom of the second but the Saints answered with two more runs in the fourth. Marks doubled to open the frame and stole second. After Flasch was hit by a pith, Kapitzke filed out to left for an RBI sac fly and a 3-1 lead. Steinkamp slashed a triple to left center to score Flasch for a 4-1 cushion. The Saints put the game away with another two-spot in the fifth. Wydra walked, and Kaelyn Worman pinch ran for her. Worman stole second and later scored on Marks' single. Taylor then doubled Marks home as the Saints built a 6-2 advantage. The teams traded single runs in the top of the seventh for the final 7-2 score. Williams allowed just six hits and one earned run to record the victory in the circle.

The Saints win their fourth straight and improve to 16-20 overall, 11-12 in the GLVC. Southern Indiana falls to 19-18, 11-17 in the league. Maryville continues on the road and faces Bellarmine Saturday for two games in Louisville, Ky.
