Saints Upset Bid Falls Short Versus #5 Tritons

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 St. Louis - The Maryville softball team was looking to topple city-rival University of Missouri-St. Louis but the No. 5 ranked Tritons used strong pitching to move past the Saints 7-2 and 4-2 Tuesday afternoon. The games were the 2014 home finale for the Saints.

In game one, the Tritons used five straight singles and batted around in the third inning for six runs and all the offense they would need. Shelby Steinkamp doubled to lead off the bottom of the third but was stranded in scoring position. UMSL tacked on a run in the top of the fourth before the Saints made a late push.

Kelsey Kapitzke reached on an error in the seventh, and Heather Wernle came in as a pinch runner. Steinkamp lashed a tripled just inside the left field line to get the Saints on the scoreboard. Casey Ward had an RBI grounder as the Saints closed to 7-2 but that would be all the offense Maryville would generate.

Triton pitcher Hannah Perryman dominated game two as the Saints managed just three hits in the contest. UMSL pushed across a run in the top of the third on back-to-back doubles to grab the early edge. Perryman recorded 11 straight strikeouts to start the game as the Saints only base runner reached on an UMSL error. The Tritons tacked onto their lead with three runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by Madison Zbaraschuk's two-run homer for a 4-0 advantage.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Karlie Twisselman laced a single back up the middle for Maryville's first hit of the game. On the next pitch, Danni Wydra hit a towering two-run shot to left field as the Saints halved their deficit to 4-2. In the bottom of the seventh, the Saints brought the potential game-tying run to the plate after Kapitzke doubled. However, the Saints were unable to dent the Tritons' defense for any more scores. Perryman was impressive in the circle as she finished with 16 strikeouts in the game.

The Saints fall to 16-24, 10-16 in the GLVC. The Tritons improve to 38-5 overall, 23-3 in the league. Maryville heads out on the road to close out the regular season with doubleheaders at Quincy and Truman State this weekend.
