Box Score 2 Quincy, Ill. -
Alex Flasch's three-run homer in the sixth inning helped the Maryville softball team rally past host Quincy 7-1 in game one of a doubleheader in Quincy, Ill. The Hawks hit three home runs in game two to record a 5-1 win and earn a split.
Quincy stuck for a run in the bottom of the first but starting pitchers
Kelsey Kapitzke and QU's Murphi Armstrong took over and did not allow another run until the decisive sixth frame.
Karlie Twisselman and
Shelby Steinkamp both reached base after QU miscues, and Flasch made the Hawks pay. She launched a three-run blast to left to give the Saints a 3-1 lead.
Nicole Taylor reached on another QU error, took second and later scored on a
Casey Ward single. The Saints put the game out of reach with three runs in the top of the seventh. Twisselman and Steinkamp both were on the basepaths, and Kapitzke's RBI single scored Twisselman. Steinkamp sprinted home as QU had another error. Taylor laced a ball up the middle to bring Kapitzke home with the final run.
The long ball would prove to be the offense of both teams in game two. QU pushed across single runs in the second and third with a solo home run in each frame.
Jennifer Maynez answered for the Saints with a solo blast of her own in the top of the fifth inning as Maryville cut its deficit in half 2-1. However, an RBI double and a two-run homer by Quincy in the bottom of the sixth sealed the win for the Hawks. Both teams recorded six hits in the game.
The Saints see their record move to 17-25 overall, 11-17 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks are now 20-29 overall, 12-21 in the league. Maryville closes out the season Saturday at No. 22 Truman State with the doubleheader starting at Noon.
