Box Score 2 Kirksville, Mo. - In the regular season finale, the Maryville softball team again challenged a top 25 squad but No. 22 Truman State edged the Saints by one run in each game, 1-0 and 2-1. The Saints close the season with a record of 17-27 overall, 11-19 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Truman State starter Kindra Henze allowed just one hit to the Saints in game one. Maryville starting pitcher Nicole Taylor was nearly as good as her counterpart and did not allow TSU a run through five innings. Meredith Brown put down a sac bunt to push Marks into scoring position but the Saints could not bring her home. Truman then used three singles as Alexis VanNostrand drove in the game's only run in the bottom of the inning. Taylor gave up just six hits as the teams only had seven combined basehits.
Game two was another low-scoring battle as the Saints struck first in the top of the third inning. Karlie Twisselman singled and took third on a TSU fielding error. Starting pitcher Kelsey Kapitzke helped herself as she doubled into the left field corner as the Saints grabbed a 1-0 lead. Truman tied the game with a single tally in the bottom of the fifth to set the stage for dramatic finish. The Saints had one runner reach base in both the sixth and seventh but were unable to jump ahead. In the bottom of the seventh, Truman loaded the bases with no outs. Andrea Klipsch put the ball in play but the Saints committed a fielding error as TSU (40-9, 30-6 GLVC) escaped with the winning run.
