Box Score 2 Rolla, Mo. - The Maryville Saints softball team pushed across two runs in the top of the 10th inning and posted a thrilling 4-2 win at Missouri S&T Saturday afternoon. The Miners edged the Saints 3-2 in the finale of the doubleheader.
Missouri S&T took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first before the Saints got on the scoreboard with one run in the third. Danni Wydra walked and took second as Shelby Steinkamp did the same. Consecutive wild pitches allowed Wydra to score as the Saints closed to 2-1. Alex Flasch promptly tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth with a solo homer.
In the tenth inning, Ashley Marks drew a walk to start the game-winning rally and took second on a ground out. Nicole Taylor singled to left center but the S&T defense committed a miscue that allowed Marks to dash home for what would prove to be the winning run. Jennifer Maynez drove an RBI single to center to bring home Taylor for a 4-2 edge. The Miners got a runner aboard in the bottom of the tenth but the Saints escaped by retiring the last two outs. Kelsey Kapitzke worked all 10 innings in the circle and gave up just five hits and one earned run to record the win.
In game two, the Miners hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to take the early lead. The Saints bounced back to tie the game in the top of the third. The Saints almost scored their first run but had a runner thrown out at the plate. However, Taylor had an infield single that scored both Meredith Brown and Marks. Missouri S&T tallied in the home half of the third as an unearned run scored on a sac fly. The Saints got the potential tying run to second with one out but were unable to push the run home as Missouri S&T kept Maryville from a hit over the last three innings.
The Saints are now 10-14 overall, 6-6 in the GLVC, while the Miners are 7-22, 4-14 in the league. Maryville is back in action Sunday as it heads to Drury for a doubleheader starting at Noon.
