Box Score 2 Springfield, Mo. - After getting edged 3-1 in the doubleheader opener at Drury, Maryville exploded for a program record for runs scored in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game during a 12-9 victory in game two.
The Panthers scored the only runs they would need in the bottom of the first on a bases-loaded single to score two runs. Drury added to its lead with a single tally in the third. The Saints got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the fourth. Karlie Twisselman singled to open the frame and Kelsey Kapitzke lashed a double to left center as the Saints pulled to within 3-1. That would prove to be the last run of the game as the Saints only managed a single over the last three innings.
In game two, the Saints hung crooked numbers in the first five innings to surpass the previous program for records in a GLVC game which stood at 11 runs. Kapitzke got the scoring outburst started with a sac fly. Alex Flasch drove in the second run, and an Ashley Marks single gave the Saints a 3-0. Drury answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to restore a tie game. In the second, Kapitzke singled with the bases loaded to drive in two runs for a 5-3 lead.
The Saints stretched out their lead when Meredith Brown's single plated Marks. Twisselman then drilled a double to center to score Shelby Steinkamp as Maryville took a 7-3 advantage. Drury took advantage of two Saints fielding errors and used four hits to score four runs and tie the game at 7-7. In the top of the fourth, it was the Panthers' miscues that fueled a three-run burst by Maryville. After three straight errors led to two Saints runs, Marks doubled in another run for a 10-7 advantage. Nicole Taylor, who scored three times in the game, clinched the win with a two-run home run for a 12-7 edge. Drury scored two late runs but the Saints closed out the win to improve to 11-15 overall, 7-7 in the GLVC. Eight Saints had at least one hit, and six different Maryville players recorded at least one RBI. The Panthers are now 9-27 overall, 6-14 in the league.
The Saints are next in action Wednesday, April 9, when they make the short trip to play UMSL for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
