Fast Start Aids Saints in 3-0 Win over Waldorf

Box Score Written by Jim Powers

St. Louis
- Maryville University used a fast start on the offensive side and played nearly flawless defense as Maryville defeated Waldorf 3-0 in the home opener for the Saints in St. Louis.

The Saints (1-0-1) started attacking the net right from the beginning for the match and it paid off with a pair of goals in the first twelve minutes of the contest. Forward Amanda Wiechens received a cross from Ashley Pogue and buried a header into the back of the net to give the Saints the early 1-0 lead at the 4:52 mark in the first half. Maryville continued to put the pressure on Waldorf (0-2) after that first goal and it paid off seven minutes later as Hana McGinis converted a Katy Rood corner kick into a goal with a perfectly placed header just past the out-stretched arms of Waldorf's goalkeeper Kaylee Vitale to make it a 2-0 game with thirty three minutes left in the half.

Maryville would get some insurance in the forty second minute as Rood received a pass from Danielle Schmitz on the right side of the box and headed it home to give the Saints a 3-0 advantage heading into the halftime locker room. Maryville controlled the pace in the first half by firing 10 shots on goal while holding Waldorf to only one shot.
In the second half, it was all defense for the Saints as senior Jen Jung led the way from her middle back position and held the Warriors to no shots in the half. Maryville continued to pressure the Waldorf defense with eight more shots in the half.

The Saints return to action at home this coming Friday, September 12th, at 5:00pm as they open up GLVC play with a match-up against McKendree University on "Fill the Hill" day.
