Missouri S&T boxscore in PDF In the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener, the Maryville men's basketball team suffered an 83-73 setback at Missouri S&T Thursday night in Rolla, Mo. The Saints lost despite outshooting the Miners from the field and the free-throw line.
The Miners jumped out to a quick start by hitting consecutive 3-pointers before
Max Mischkulnig scored inside to get the Saints on the board. After a bucket by the Miners,
Marvin Grant-Clark sank a 3-pointer to pull the Saints to 8-5 later made a layup to pull Maryville to 13-7. The Miners scored nine of the next 12 points and built a double-digit edge.
Derek Deters scored on a layup, and Grant-Clark drained a triple to draw the Saints to 22-15. Missouri S&T scored a basket but
Karson King scored inside and followed with a 3-pointer. A Grant-Clark basket pulled the Saints to 24-22. Maryville stayed close and kept the margin at two points before the Miners settled for a 40-35 lead at halftime.
The home side scored the first four points after break before Grant-Clark and Mischkulnig sandwiched baskets around a Miner score.
Damyan Stoyanov and Mischkulnig had consecutive layups to pull the Saints to within 49-45 with 13 minutes to play.
Grant Sims and
Saikou Jallow both hit two free throws apiece as the Saints inched closer 52-49. The teams traded one free throw, and Deters' make put the score at 53-50 with just over eight minutes remaining. However, the Miners ran off an 8-0 run to jump back ahead 61-50. A Grant-Clark three-point play ended the run for Maryville.
The Saints did not allow the Miners to pull away, and
Jeff Leeson sank a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 70-62. However, the Saints were unable to get any closer than nine points as the Miners improved to 2-5 overall, 0-1 in the GLVC. B.J. McLaughlin paced Missouri S&T with 27 points.
The loss spoiled a 19-point, eight-rebounds output by Grant-Clark. Deters was second on the team with 12 points, while Jallow added 10 points. King topped the Saints with a season-high 10 rebounds.
Maryville is back in action Saturday as it hosts Drury at 3 p.m. in the conference home opener. The game is the annual "Silent Night" contest, and Saints fans are to remain silent until Maryville scores its 10th point of the game.
