Saints Rally Falls Short 82-78 Verus Drury

The Maryville men's basketball team had a late rally fall short as Drury held on to down the Saints 82-78 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference home opener. Forrester Sims poured in 20 points, while Max Mischkulnig recorded a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
The Saints were down 23-16 but came back to take a lead. Saikou Jallow hit a jumper, and Damyan Stoyanov drained a wing 3-pointer. Marvin Grant-Clark scored on a layup to close the 9-0 run for a 25-23 Saints lead. Drury scored to go back in front but Grant-Clark splashed in a triple for a 28-27 lead. However, Drury's Kameron Bundy hit a long 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer for a 30-28 advantage.
 
Neither team could mount a run in the second half until the Panthers edged to a 54-48 lead with 11 minutes to play. Grant-Clark hit a 3-pointer, and Mischkulnig scored on consecutive layups to give the Saints a 55-54 lead with 8:54 to go. The Panthers scored eight of the next 10 points and eventually led 62-57. Drury went up 74-67 with two minutes to play before the Saints mounted a late push. Sims made a jumper but Drury hit three free throws and led 77-69 until Sims answered with a deep 3-pointer from the corner.
 
The Panthers made one at the line before a Grant-Clark try pulled the Saints to 78-75 with 22 seconds remaining. Bundy sank two at the stripe but Grant-Clark answered with another triple as the Saints closed to 80-78 with four seconds to play. The Saints tried to foul and send Drury to the line, but an intentional foul was whistled on Maryville. Drew Moore iced the game with two free throws for the final four-point margin.
 
Sims hit 4-of-5 from deep and 8-of-12 from the field en route to a team-high 20 points, while also dishing out six assists. Mischkulnig also shot 8-of-12 from the field, while Grant-Clark nailed five 3-pointers and completed his night with 19 points. Bundy led Drury with 26 points and six assists as the Panthers improved to 5-2 overall, 2-0 in the GLVC.
 
The Saints are 2-6 overall, 0-2 in the league. Maryville is back in action Saturday, Dec. 12, when they make the voyage to north St. Louis to face the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
