Four in Double Figures Not Enough to Stop Southern Indiana

Southern Indiana boxscore in PDF

The Maryville women's basketball team had a balanced attack against Southern Indiana and four players scored in double figures but the Screaming Eagles held off a late charge by the Saints to record an 82-66 win in Moloney Arena Saturday.

USI scored the first six points of the game before Rita Flynn got the Saints on the scoreboard. The visitors slowly built up a double-digit lead and were up 27-13 before the Saints made a charge. Jordynn Martin scored on a layup, and Shelby Miller sank a jumper. The Screaming Eagles scored a bucket before Martin and Ali Ringering had consecutive hoops as the Saints pulled to 29-21 with 4:46 left in the half. USI rebuilt its lead and settled for a 42-30 lead at halftime.

USI held a 46-32 edge early in the second half until the Saints scored six straight. Maryville made three free throws, and a Miller 3-pointer pulled the Saints to 46-38 with 16 minutes to go. The Screaming Eagles nailed a trey to push their margin back to double digits. Midway through the half, the Saints were down 60-49 before Hayley Maystead hit a wing jumper, and Jade Rogers' layup cut the deficit to 60-53 with 8:47 remaining. The Saints were still as close as 65-57 after two Frala free throws with 6:02 left but were unable to trim the deficit to fewer than that.

Miller hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points, while Frala tied her career high with 13 points while hitting eight free throws to pace the Saints (13-11, 7-8 GLVC). Alex Hillyer added 12 points, and Flynn finished with 10. Tanner Marcum hit 10-of-14 shots for USI (20-5, 12-3 GLVC) en route to 26 points, while Anna Hackert had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The Saints host their final home game of the season Thursday, Feb. 19, when Truman State visits for 1000 Saints Day at 5:30 p.m. The game is also Senior Day for Saints Rita Flynn, Shelby Miller, Alissa Oney and Jade Rogers.
