Final Dr. Lombardi/Maryville Duals results in PDF

At the second annual Dr. Mark Lombardi/Maryville Duals, the No. 2 Maryville wrestling team posted a 2-1 mark. The Saints defeated Indianapolis and No. 4 Ouachita Baptist but were narrowly edged by No. 3 Notre Dame.

In their first match, the Saints fell behind Indianapolis 9-0 as the Greyhounds took the first three bouts. Keenan Hagerty started the Maryville comeback as he recorded a fall at the 4:47 mark, and Greg Hegarty tied the match with a takedown early in overtime. UIndy won the battle at 165 to retake the lead but a forfeit handed the Saints a 15-12 advantage. The Saints then closed out the match with three straight wins. Nick Burghardt recorded a fall in just 54 seconds, while Ryan Beltz won 4-1. Morgan Denson closed out the victory with a 5-0 shutout in the heavyweights. The Saints' final victory score was 27-12.

Against No. 4 Ouachita Baptist, the Saints trailed 6-0 before winning four straight matches. James Krischke started the comeback with a sparkling 6-4 win over the No. 1 wrester at 141 in Josh Myers. After a 10-2 major by Hagerty, Hegarty posted a 3-1 win to keep the momentum going for the Saints. Dimitri Willis posted an 11-6 decision, and Zeb Wahle finished off a 13-4 major to grab a 17-9 advantage. Ouachita took the 184 bout to cut the Saints' lead to 17-12 and were winning late in the 197 match. However, Beltz turned the tables on his opponent and rallied for a 7-5 win. Denson capped the comeback with a fall at 1:47 as the Saints recorded a 26-12 win.

Notre Dame was looking for a measure of revenge when the Saints defeated the Falcons in the finals of the NWCA National Duals in January. NDC won three close contests to start the dual to grab an early 9-0 lead. Hagerty was extended to overtime but recorded a takedown 36 seconds in to get the Saints on the board. Hegarty battled No. 2 in 157 Jonatan Rivera but was edged out 5-3. Willis recorded a 3-1 win at 165 as the Saints answered to get to 12-6. At 174, a battle between top three wrestlers Wahle and top-ranked Joey Davis was a thriller. Wahle took a 1-0 lead on an escape, but Davis pulled even on an escape. Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie before Davis recorded a takedown early in the extra session for a 15-6 lead.

Another clash between ranked wrestlers took place at 184 between No. 7 Burghardt and No. 1 Garrett Lineberger. A key point in the match took place in the second when Burghardt rode out the entire two minute period to establish control and added a takedown to inch the Saints closer at 15-9. Beltz scored the first five points of his match at 197 and eased to a win to cut the NDC lead to 15-12. In the heavyweight finale, Denson looked to complete a perfect day. Trailing 2-0 he grabbed one point back on an escape. Logan Rimmer also recorded an escape to rebuild a 3-1 lead. Denson logged another escape to pull to 3-2 but was unable to tie or take the lead as the Falcons held on for an 18-12 match win.

In the first round, Notre Dame defeated McKendred 21-16, and Ouachita Baptist downed King College 39-9. In the second round of matches, Notre Dame beat Indianapolis 39-6, and McKendree posted a 33-16 win over King.
