Starting a two-game swing through Indiana, the Maryville women's basketball team let an early lead slip away and dropped a 44-37 decision at Saint Joseph's Thursday in Rensselaer, Ind.

The Saints scored the first seven points of the game and stretched their advantage to 10-2. Jade Rogers began the game with a trey, and Carly Frala added two free throws. Alex Hillyer's bucket put the Saints up by After the Pumas got on the scoreboard, Hillyer drilled a 3-pointer for a 10-2 Maryville lead six minutes into the game.

SJC slowly cut into the Saints' lead and used a 9-2 run to pull to within 12-11. Hillyer scored inside off a feed from Jordynn Martin for a 14-11 lead midway through the first half. Both defenses stepped forward and shut down the offensive attack of the opposing squad. Hillyer converted two free throws for a 16-12 lead but the Pumas scored the final six points of the half to take an 18-16 lead at halftime.

The Pumas started the second half with a burst and scored nine consecutive points to take their biggest lead of the game at 27-16. Shelby Miller finally broke the Saints dry spell with a jumper on the right wing to cut the deficit back to single digits. The Pumas sandwiched two 3-pointers around a free throw to inch back ahead. Hillyer converted two free throws.

The Saints were still down 14 before making a late push. Rogers sank a triple, and after a SJC hoop, Hayley Maystead and Ali Ringering made back-to-back baskets to draw Maryville to 39-30. In the final minute, Ringering converted a 3-pointer, and after a Miller steal, Ringering scored a layup to pull the Saints to 41-35. However, the Pumas hit three of their final four free throws to stave off the Maryville rally.

Hillyer led the Saints with 11 points, while Rogers hauled down 12 rebounds. The duo also posted four blocks apiece. Kalea Parks led Saint Joseph's with 12 points.

The Saints slip to 12-9 overall, 6-6 in the GLVC. The Pumas up their mark to 9-13 overall, 4-7 in the conference. Maryville closes out a four-game road swing Saturday at Indianapolis.
