Box Score 2 The Maryville baseball team opened up play for the 2015 by dropping both games of a doubleheader at No. 10 Alabama-Huntsville. The Chargers took game one 11-1 and rallied to edge the Saints 2-1 in the nightcap.
The Chargers used a two-run homer to grab the early lead and tacked on additional runs in three of the next four innings. The Saints scored their only run when Nate Steffler homered to left in the top of the sixth. Kaleb Depew doubled to right to start the seventh inning but Maryville would not add to its run total. Yoonjae Nam doubled to open the top of the eighth but was unable to come around and score. The Saints made one late push in the ninth when they worked three straight walks but again were stymied as the game ended.
In the second game, the Saints took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Mike Wilkinson blasted a solo homer to left. Maryville starter Robbie Gordon did not allow a run until the Chargers answered with a tally in the bottom of the fourth. UAH used three hits to inch ahead in the bottom of the sixth to take a 2-1 advantage. The Saints were unable to generate a hit and could not tie the game in the final two innings.
The teams finish the series Sunday with the final game of the season-opening set.
