Saints Softball Upsets No. 15 Winona State; Edged by Lynn

The Maryville softball team upset No. 15 Winona State 8-5 to highlight the second day of play at the College Spring Games in Claremont, Fla. Earlier in the day, the Saints were edged 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh by Lynn.

The Saints scored an unearned run in the top of the first but the Knights pulled even in the bottom of the frame. Maryville again took the lead on another unearned run in the top of the third. Lynn answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning for a 3-2 before the Saints tallied solo runs in the fifth and sixth. Nicole Taylor homered to left to tie the game. Heather Wernle lifted a sac fly to score Sheridon Sprague with the go-ahead run in the sixth. However, the Knights rallied with two runs in the seventh. Lynn put down back-to-back bunts, with the squeeze bunt chasing home the winning run.

In their second game of the afternoon, the Saints ended Winona State's six-game winning streak and drop the Warriors to 13-2 on the season. The victory snapped Maryville's four-game skid as the Saints improved to 2-8 this season. Sprague singled in the first run of the game for the Saints, and Darby Ferguson's RBI single tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first. In the third, the Saints used small ball and manufactured three runs on sac bunts and a sacrifice fly to jump ahead 5-3. The Warriors tied the game with two runs in the top of the fifth before the Saints struck for the game-winning runs. In the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Courtney Ferguson walked and stole second. Ashley Marks singled in a run, which would prove to be the game winner, and took second on the play. Taylor lashed a single to build the Saints lead, and she eventually stole home for the final run of the game to seal the win.

Maryville takes on West Liberty and Ohio Dominican on day three of the tourney.
