Pitcher Ryan Van Volkenberg gave up just one run over seven innings as the Maryville baseball team won game one 3-1 at Bellarmine in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both squads. The Knights returned to take game two with a 7-5 decision. The teams will play two more games Monday morning to close out the series which is being played at St. Xavier High School in Louisville.
Mike Wilkinson singled to open the second and took third on Kaleb Depew's single. Depew stole second as Wilkinson scored on a BU miscue to five Maryville the 1-0 lead. After Dalton Schumer put down a sac bunt, Nate Steffler singled to bring home Depew for a 2-0 advantage. In the fourth, Steffler again came through with an RBI as he skied a sac fly to bring Wilkinson home for a 3-0 margin. Bellarmine pulled one score back in the fourth but the Saints did not allow the Knights to inch any closer. After giving up a single, Brandon Downey shutdown Bellarmine in the ninth to finish up the contest.
In game two, Yoonjae Nam walked, took second on a wild pitch and reached third on Troy Payton's sac bunt. Nam then scored on Wilkinson's single to center. The Knights answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to start their comeback. Bellarmine used three hits to score three tallies and extend its lead. After Depew scored on a run in the fourth, Nam doubled in two more runs as the Saints cut their deficit to one. Bellarmine used a double with the bases loaded to extend its lead to 7-4. The Saints cut their deficit to two when Mitch Carriger singled to chase home Depew with Maryville's fifth run. The Saints had their best chance to tie the game in the sixth but stranded the bases loaded.
