Maryville and Illinois Springfield split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Weber Field. The Saints held off the Prairie Stars 5-4 in the first game but UIS won a high-scoring 12-7 game in the second contest. The teams play the series finale Sunday starting at Noon.
UIS scored the game's first run in the top of the second but the Saints tied it in the home half. Mitch Carriger singled to open the frame and dashed to third on Tyler Catlett's long single to right. Carriger then scored on Nate Steffler's drag bunt single.
Saints starter Ryan Van Volkenburg and UIS's Christoperh Irwin took over and kept both offenses in check until the Saints broke though in the bottom of the sixth. Maryville used three hits and took advantage of two UIS miscues to push across four unearned runs. Mike Wilkinson had a sac fly to score Steffler with the go-ahead run. Sean Murphy's single plated Garrett Jones with a run for a 3-1 lead. Murphy and Tyler Omlid both scored to push Maryville's advantage to 5-1. The Saints would need the cushion as UIS pieced together four hits and scored three runs. However, Brandon Downey recorded a strikeout with runners on second and third to preserve the win for Julian Langford.
In game two, the Saints struck with two runs in the bottom of the second. Steffler again put down a bunt single that scored Yoonjae Nam. Later, Omlid did the same to chase Steffler home as the Saints built a 2-0 lead. UIS answered with four runs in the top of the third as the Prairie Stars batted around for a 4-2 advantage. Each team scored one run in the fifth before the Saints pulled another run back in the sixth. Nam worked a walk, stole second and scored on Taylor's single to center. However, UIS had a homer and a double to score three times in the seventh. The Stars nearly put the game away with two runs in the top of the seventh before the Saints made a late charge. Steffler had a two-run triple and scored on Taylor's groundout but that would prove to be the final Saints runs.
The Saints stand at 9-11 overall, 2-5 in the GLVC. UIS is now 9-10 overall, 3-4 in the conference.
