The Maryville baseball team closed out a four-game series at Drury Sunday, and the Panthers took both ends of a doubleheader to take the series. The Panthers won game one Sunday 9-3 and held on for a 9-7 triumph in the final game. The Saints hit three solo home runs on the day.
Â
Drury took the lead in the second with one run and added three more in the third. The Saints struck for a score in the visitor's half of the fourth when
Kaleb Depew launched a solo home run to pull the Saints to 4-1.
Sean Murphy singled to lead off the sixth and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. After a walk, Murphy reached third on a fielder's choice.
Mitch Carriger delivered an RBI single to right to score Maryville's second run. The Saints scored their final run of the game when
Andrew Naegeli drilled a solo blast to left.
Â
In series finale, the Panthers pushed across three runs before the Saints recorded single tallies in the third and fourth.
Garrett Jones had a double to start the third, and after a ground out, he scored on Depew's sac fly.
Mike Wilkinson parked a ball over the fence for the third solo home run of the day to pull the Saints to 3-2. After Drury went back up 5-2, the Saints tied the game with three scores in the top of the fifth. Depew was hit by a pitch, and
Yoonjae Nam walked to put two aboard. Carriger drove Depew in with a single, and Wilkinson doubled home two more to force a 5-5 tie. However, the Panthers scored the go ahead run in the sixth and tacked on two more in the seventh. Maryville answered with its own two-run burst in the eight. Wilkinson and Naegeli notched back-to-back doubles, and Naegeli scored on a Drury error to pull the Saints to within one at 8-7. The Panthers added an insurance run in the home half of the eighth. Maryville got the potential game-tying run on base when
Tyler Omlid and Wilkinson recorded consecutive singles in the top of the ninth but the Saints were unable to bring them home.
Â
The Saints stand at 10-15 overall, 3-9 in the conference, while the Panthers are 11-9-1 overall, 7-4-1 in the league. Maryville returns to Weber Field Wednesday as it hosts University of Missouri-St. Louis for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
