Bonds Pitches Saints to Win at UMSL: Schumer with Key Defensive Play

Josh Bonds pitched six innings of relief, and Dalton Schumer's leaping catch keyed Maryville's 4-3 game one win at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tuesday afternoon in north St. Louis. The Tritons used a steady offense and pulled away to take game two 9-2.

The Tritons pulled off a double steal to score the first run of the game and led 2-0 after the first. The Saints manufactured a run in the top of the second and took advantage of an UMSL wild pitch. Schumer started the rally in the fourth when he was hit by a pitch, took second on a grounder and reached third on a single. Garrett Taylor's fielder's choice tied the game at 2-2. Later, Brad Ridings singled to right center to push the Saints ahead 3-2. Maryville tacked on the eventual game winner when Tyler Catlett walked and scored on an UMSL fielding miscue.

Bonds, who entered the game in the second inning, held the UMSL bats in check but the Tritons loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. UMSL scored one run on a Maryville error and still had the bases loaded with two outs. UMSL's JJ Kinnevan drilled what appeared was going to be the game-winning hit but shortstop Schumer jumped up and snared the ball for the game-ending catch. Bonds gave up just four hits and the one unearned run to pick up the win.

In game two, the Tritons took the early lead but in the top of the second Schumer launched a deep solo home run that bounced off the scoreboard in left field to tie the game 1-1. The Tritons answered with a two-run triple to retake the lead in the home half of the second for a 3-1 advantage. UMSL scored in four of the next five innings and slowly built up a comfortable cushion. The Saints added a late run in the eighth inning. Garrett Jones doubled, took third on an Andrew Naegeli single and scored on an UMSL error.

The Saints are now 14-23 overall, 7-17 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Tritons move to 19-10 overall, 14-10 in the league. Maryville is next is action this weekend as it travels to West Division leader William Jewell.
