Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Maryville baseball team challenged GLVC West Division leader William Jewell but the Cardinals kept the Saints offense in check in taking the first two games of the series. The Saints were shutout 5-0 in game one and 1-0 in the nightcap.
Â
The Saints were limited to four hits while William Jewell hit a two-run homer in the first for all the offense it would need. The Saints had their best scoring chance in the third inning. Zach Ruckman walked, and
Garrett Taylor and
Kaleb Depew notched back-to-back hits to load the bases. However, Maryville hit into a double play to end the threat. The Cardinals tacked on three runs in the fifth. The Saints made another attempt at a rally when they got two runners aboard in both the seventh and eighth innings but were unable to tally a run. Depew managed two hits but was the only Saint to record a multi-hit game.
Â
In game two,
Justin Laffleur and
Robbie Gordon combined to all just six hits and one run but the Saints again were unable to dent the scoreboard. The Cardinals scored their only run of the game in the third. The Saints nailed a runner at third base to stem the WJC rush but the home squad received an RBI single for the only run of the game.
Mike Wilkinson singled and eventually reached third base but was stranded there to end the sixth inning.
Evan Reister notched two base hits, including a double, to lead the Saints.
Â
Laffleur scattered six hits in four innings of work, while Gordon did not allow a hit over two innings. The Saints fall to 15-25, 7-19 in the GLVC. The Cardinals are now 28-9, 18-7 in the league.
