The Maryville baseball team took both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader for the first time this season as the Saints rode excellent pitching to post 2-1 and 3-2 wins over West Division leader William Jewell.
Â
The Saints took the lead in the third inning when
Brad Ridings doubled and took third on a WJC error.
Mike Wilkinson doubled Ridings in to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. William Jewell tied the game in the fifth by sandwiching its only two hits of the game around a sac bunt to force a 1-1 tie. However,
Mitch Carriger launched a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning for the decisive strike. For the second straight outing,
Steven Reynolds went the distance and did not allow a hit outside of the third inning. He only faced three over the minimum to improve to 4-3 on the season. Reynolds has given up just one run and six hits over his last 16 innings of work.
Â
Neither team could push across a run until Wilkinson began the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run. In the next inning, Zach Ruckman smacked the third solo homer of the day for Maryville as the Saints built a 2-0 lead. The visitors added another single run in the sixth inning. With two outs, Carriger walked and sprinted home on
Dalton Schumer's RBI double, which would prove to be the game winner. William Jewell finally got on the scoreboard with two runs on three hits. The Cardinals had the potential game-winning run on first base but
Brandon Downey induced a fly ball to center to end the contest.
Â
Josh Bonds pitched four innings and surrendered just two hits to pick up his second victory of the season. Downey recorded the final three outs for his seventh save.
Â
The Saints jump to 17-25, 9-19 in the GLVC, while the Cardinals drop to 28-11, 18-9 in the conference. Maryville is next in action when it hosts McKendree Tuesday, April 21, in a nonconference game starting at 3 p.m.
