Game Recap: Baseball | | St. Louis

Miners Score Late Twice to Topple Saints

The Maryville baseball squad dropped two contests in the waning innings as Missouri S&T scored in its final at-bat to win both games Sunday at Weber Field. The Miners scored four times in the top of the seventh to win game one 6-2 and twice in the top of the ninth inning to close out the series 10-8.

The Miners scored single runs in the third and sixth to edge ahead in a pitcher's duel between starters Steven Reynolds and Miner's pitcher Micah Dohlen. The Saints tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Zach Ruckman was hit by a pitch, and pinch hitter Garrett Jones singled to put two runners aboard. A wild pitch moved both runners up, and Brad Ridings laced a single to left as Ruckman scored. On the play, the ball bounced away in the outfield and allowed Jones to tie the game at 2-2. However, the Miners used five hits to push across four runs and win the contest.

Game two was a slugfest and the Saints outhit the Miners 12-11 but again the visitor's scored in their last at-bat to emerge with the win. Missouri S&T tallied twice in the top of the first but Mike Wilkinson drove in his first run to bring Maryville back to 2-1. The Miners stretched their lead out to 5-1 before Wilkinson launched a solo home run to left in the bottom of the fourth. Maryville inched closer as Wilkinson had his third RBI of the game, and Mitch Carriger singled in another run to cut the gap to 5-4. Missouri S&T scored three runs in the top of the seventh before the Saints eventually tied the game with four in the home half of the inning. With the bases loaded, Ridings doubled down the line to plate two runs. Troy Payton later scored on a wild pitch, and Wilkinson had his fourth RBI on a sac fly to score Ridings and tie the game 8-8. The Miners took advantage of a Maryville miscue to score two unearned runs. The Saints managed to get the potential game-winning run to the plate with one out but were unable to score.

The Saints fall to 11-20 overall, 4-14 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Miners continued their strong recent run and improved to 18-11 overall, 13-5 in the league. Maryville is next in action when it hosts Rockhurst for a four-game series starting Saturday, April 11.
