Saints Outhit Truman but Late Rally Falls Short 3-2

Despite out-hitting Truman State 10 to seven, the Maryville baseball team had a late rally fall short as the Bulldogs held on for a 3-2 win over the Saints Friday in Kirksville, Mo. Maryville had the potential game-tying run on second base as the game ended.

The Saints had at least one base hit in the first three innings but were unable to push across a run. Truman tallied a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI double for a 1-0 lead and tacked on another solo run in the fourth. The Saints again had hits in the fourth and fifth innings but again stranded runners. Truman scored another solo tally for a 3-0 lead after five innings.

The Saints finally broke through in the top of the ninth. Mitch Carriger singled and took second on passed ball. Yoonjae Nam singled to put runners on the corner. Pinch hitter Sean Murphy had an infield single that cut the Truman lead to 3-1. Nate Steffler put down a sac bunt that was misplayed by TSU to load the bases. Garrett Jones came on as a pinch hitter and lifted a sac fly to left that scored Nam as the Saints closed to 3-2. With one out, the Saints had two more opportunities to tie the game but two straight fly outs ended the game. Seven different Saints had at least one hit in the contest.

Maryville stands at 17-30 overall, 9-24 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Truman improves to 29-16 overall, 20-13 in the league. The teams play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
