The Maryville baseball team swept both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader as the Saints downed Truman State 9-5 and 2-0 in a rain-delayed doubleheader in Kirksville, Mo.
Â
After the Bulldogs scored the first three runs of the game, the Saints responded with nine straight scores to seize command.
Garrett Taylor scored Maryville's first run on a wild pitch in the top of the third, and
Mike Wilkinson rifled an RBI single down the line in right to plate
Brad Ridings.
Tyler Catlett's sac fly tied the game at 3-all, and
Kaleb Depew's single scored
Evan Reister to push the Saints ahead 4-3 in the fourth. The Saints continued their burst when Wilkinson leadoff the fifth with a solo home run for a 5-3 advantage. Wilkinson worked a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to drive in his third run of the game. After a rain delay that lasted more than two hours, the Saints kept up their offensive attack as Depew scored on a wild pitch.
Yoonjae Nam doubled in two more runs to close out the scoring.
Â
In game two, the Saints rode the right arm of
Robbie Gordon who spun a five-hit shutout while recording nine strikeouts. The Saints scored the only run they would need in the fourth.
Troy Payton singled, took second on Nam's sac bunt and moved over to third on a ground out. Taylor drilled an RBI single to center for a 1-0 Maryville lead. The Saints doubled their advantage in the fifth. Depew singled and advanced to second on Zach Ruckman's sacrifice. Depew took third on a passed ball. After Ridings walked, he and Depew pulled off a double steal as Depew's run put the Saints ahead 2-0. Gordon made sure that was enough offense as he retired the first eight batters and only gave up the five hits. Truman threatened in the seventh and had the potential game-winning run up to bat but Gordon ended the game with a strikeout. The Saints handed TSU pitcher Kent Frantz his first loss of the season (8-1).
Â
Maryville improves to 19-30 overall, 11-24 in the GLVC. Truman State dips to 29-18 overall, 20-15 in the league. The Saints and Bulldogs close out the regular season with a single game Sunday.
