Saints Record Fifth Straight Win with 89-78 Decision over UAM

The Maryville men's basketball team ran its winning streak to five as it rallied to post an 89-78 victory over visiting Arkansas-Monticello Saturday afternoon. The Saints have won five straight for the first time since early in the 2012-13 season. A trio of Saints finished with 18 points to pace the Maryville attack.
 
The Boll Weevils led 63-56 with just under 10 minutes to play before the Saints started their rally. Saikou Jallow had a three-point play, and Max Mischkulnig added two free throws. After UAM scored a basket, Marvin Grant-Clark sank a 3-pointer to pull the Saints to 65-64. UAM scored to take a 67-64 edge but the Saints scored the next nine points to surge ahead. Grant-Clark made two free throws and pushed the Saints ahead 69-67 on a 3-pointer at the 7:08 mark. Mischkulnig knocked down a jumper, and Forrester Sims scored on a drive for a 73-67 Saints edge.
 
UAM broke the Saints run with a hoop but the Saints answered with six straight points to take control. Grant-Clark sank two at the stripe before Jallow converted back-to-back layups. The Boll Weevils hit one free throw before Sims had a three-point play for an 82-70 lead with two minutes to play. The Saints led by as many as 14 points to cruise to the win. Maryville shot 51.7 percent from the field (31-of-60). The Saints took advantage of their free throws as they hit 22-of-26 at the line (84.6 percent.)
 
Mischkulnig narrowly missed a double-double and had 18 points and nine rebounds. Jallow enjoyed a strong all-around outing with 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Grant-Clark was the third Saint to finish with 18 points, while Sims added 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. Jamal Peterson led Arkansas-Monticello (3-7) with 18 points, while Evan Sims had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
 
The Saints improved to 7-6 on the season and return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday, Jan. 7, as they travel to Indianapolis.
