Stephanie Sherwood and 13 rebounds by
Alex Wolf, the Maryville women's basketball team opened its 2016-17 season with a 58-44 victory over Greenville Saturday afternoon. The game was the debut for Saints first-year head coach Collin Lanam.
Wolf sparked the Maryville offense in the first quarter as she scored six points and hit all three of her field goal attempts. The Saints outscored the Panthers 12-9 in the second quarter to take a 23-19 lead into intermission.
Greenville scored the first four points of the third and tied the game at 23-all before the Saints answered and took control of the contest.
Brooklyn Chaffin drilled a 3-pointer, and
Amanda Ponce hit a layup. Chaffin splashed in another triple to give the Saints a 31-23 lead just three minutes into the quarter. The Panthers stayed close and trimmed the gap to 32-29.
Ali Ringering converted a 3-pointer for Maryville. Greenville scored on a layup before the Saints used a 6-0 burst to build a double-digit advantage. Sherwood scored inside, and Wolf added one free throw. Sherwood sank another shot from beyond the arc for a 41-31 advantage. Greenville made one free throw as Maryville took a 41-32 lead into the final stanza.
Sherwood scored on the first possession of the fourth quarter, and a Ponce layup built the biggest lead of the day at 46-32 with 8:52 left to play. Greenville made one more run and inched as close as 46-38 before Chaffin and Sherwood scored to rebuild a double-digit lead at 50-38. The Saints iced the game away by hitting all four free throws in the final minute.
Sherwood hit three 3-pointers en route to her 15-point output and added five rebounds. Chaffin also made three triples and finished with 13 points and five assists. Ponce chipped in 10 points and four rebounds.
Carly Frala notched four steals to lead the defensive efforts for Maryville. Claire Schmitt led Greenville with 11 points.
The Saints are next in action at a tournament hosted by Quincy University Nov. 18-19.
