Late Rally Falls Short as No 16 Winona State Holds Off Saints 61-59

- In the opening game of the Subway Tip-Off Classic in Quincy, Ill., the Maryville women's basketball team battled against No. 16 Winona State but fell 61-59 Friday night. Ali Ringering hit a 3-pointer with 3.2 seconds left but WSU sealed the game with one free throw. The Saints play Minnesota State Moorhead Saturday afternoon to close the tourney.
 
The Saints scored on three straight possessions to forge a 6-6 tie but then did not score for more than four minutes as Winona State surged ahead. Ringering nailed a 3-pointer as the Saints pulled to within 13-9. Maryville trailed 15-11 after the first quarter. Three minutes into the second, Amanda Ponce and Ringering drilled triples as the Saints tied the game at 19-all. However, Winona State used an 8-1 run to grab a 27-20 advantage midway through the quarter. Maryville cut the deficit down to two and went into halftime down 32-27.
 
The Saints were down 34-27 before Brooklyn Chaffin and Stephanie Sherwood sandwiched 3-pointers around a Warriors' bucket. Ellen Foster scored on a layup as Maryville pulled to within 36-35 at the 2:23 mark. After a WSU timeout, the Warriors scored the last five points of the quarter to take a 41-35 lead.
 
Maryville stayed close and made a push midway through the fourth quarter. Ringering sank a jump, to start a 6-2 run. Madeline Hartke followed with a basket, and Alex Wolf scored inside to pull the Saints to 47-46 with 4:47 to play. Tara Roelofs tallied consecutive jumpers for WSU to restore a 51-46 lead. Ringering answered with a deep 3-pointer to draw the Saints to 51-49 with three minutes to go. However, the Warriors went on a 6-0 run to surge back ahead. Maryville closed to 59-56 with 29 seconds left on a Chaffin triple. Winona State hit one free throw before Ringering drilled another 3-pointer from the left wing to draw the Saints to 60-59 with 3.2 seconds left. Winona State hit one free throw to close out the game.
 
Ringering scored 17 points, while Sherwood finished with 11 points, and Ponce added 10 points and four assists. Wolf hauled down 12 rebounds. The Saints knocked down eight 3-pointers in the contest.
 
The Saints are now 1-1 on the season, and Winona State improves to 3-1. Maryville is back in action Wednesday, Nov. 23, as it travels to Memphis, Tenn., for a tilt at LeMoyne-Owen. The next home game for the Saints is Friday, Nov. 25, as the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez visits Moloney Arena for a 4 p.m. game.
