Cedar Falls, Iowa - In its final exhibition game, the Maryville women's basketball team faced defending Missouri Valley Conference regular season champion Northern Iowa, and the Panthers rugged defense slowed the Saints attack in a 77-34 win over Maryville. The Saints open the regular season Saturday, Nov. 12, when they host Greenville in a 1 p.m. start in Moloney Arena.
Against UNI, the Saints fell behind 9-0 before Alex Wolf hit two free throws to get Maryville on the scoreboard. Later in the quarter, Wolf and Stephanie Sherwood made consecutive buckets as the Saints closed to 15-6. Wolf and Amanda Ponce scored late as the first quarter ended with UNI holding a 23-10 edge over the Saints. In the second quarter, Maryville could only muster three free throws before Sherwood scored on a baseline spin move. The Panthers extended their lead to 40-15 at halftime.
UNI opened the third quarter with seven straight points. Erin Lenahan drained a long jumper, and Ponce scored on a layup as the Panthers extended their lead. In the final quarter, the Saints offense picked up as Sherwood and Ponce hit back-to-back buckets. Brooklyn Chaffin sank the first 3-pointer for the Saints, and Madeline Hartke followed with another triple.
The Saints had four players who all scored six points apiece. Ellen Foster led Maryville in rebounding with five. The Saints struggled from the field and shot just 27.7 percent while making two 3-pointers. Madison Weekly and Angie Davison led UNI with 12 points. The Panthers forced the Saints into 26 turnovers.
