Kenosha, Wisc. - The Maryville wrestling team recorded eight placers, including four runner-up finishes, to highlight the results at the Wisconsin Open hosted by UW-Parkside Saturday in Kenosha, Wisc.
Jaret Singh rolled to a second-place finish at 125 pounds to start the day. He recorded a 10-2 major to begin his run, and followed with a pin at the 3:43 mark in the quarterfinals. Singh mauled his semifinal foe in a 17-2 tech fall. However, in the finals, he was edged 6-3 for the title. At 141, Nate Rodriguez notched back-to-back falls to open his run. He had a pin at the 2:27 mark, then another at 2:55 in the final eight. Rodriguez rolled to an 8-5 win in the semis before dropping a high-scoring 15-10 match in the finals.
Derrick Swaney posted a 6-4 win in his 165 quarterfinal match but lost his semifinal bout. In the consolation semis, he edged teammate Matt Pratt. Swaney battled in the third-place match but fell 2-0. Pratt himself opened with a quick fall at 1:04 before dropping his quarterfinal match. He recorded another fall in the consolation bracket and followed up with a 12-4 major decision. After Pratt was defeated by Swaney, he was edged 6-5 in the fifth-place contest. Travis Lang began his day in the 174-pound classification with a pin at the 4:07 mark. He scored the only point of the match in his quarterfinal win but was edged in the semifinals 6-4 that eventually ended his day.
At 197, the Saints picked up two placers with a second and a fourth. Ethan Sherertz opened his tournament with a 2:34 fall and followed up by rolling to a 16-0 tech fall. In the semifinals, he edged fellow Saint Dustin Politte by a 2-1 count. Sherertz eventually lost in the finals to close his tourney. Politte dominated his first two matches with falls at 49 seconds and 1:33, respectively. He then notched a 9-2 win in the quarterfinals. After his loss to Sherertz, Politte notched another pin in just 39 seconds. However, he lost the third-place match to take fourth place.
Donnell Walker cruised in his first three matches to reach the finals of the heavyweight division. He cruised to a 21-6 tech fall, then had a pin in the quarterfinals in 4:51. Walker was a grinder in the semifinals and notched a 4-2 sudden victory win in overtime. He lost a one-point decision for the title by a 3-2 score.
The Saints are next in action Saturday, Dec. 10, as they head to the Doane University Open in Crete, Neb.
