Johnson Pours in 28 Points to Pace Saints to 87-49 Win over Robert Morris

- Senior Anthony Johnson poured in a season-best 28 points, including 21 in the first half, to pace the Maryville men's basketball team to an 87-49 victory over Robert Morris-Springfield Tuesday night. He hit eight field goals in the first 20 minutes including going 5-of-6 from 3-point range.
 
The Saints scored seven of the first nine points of the game and were up 7-4 before scoring seven straight. Johnson hit a jumper, and Forrester Sims added a layup. Johnson drilled a 3-pointer for a 14-4 lead. The Eagles finally hit a basket before the Saints tacked on another 9-2 burst. Johnson sank another triple, and Grant Sims also knocked down a shot from beyond the arc. Yet another trey from Johnson boosted the Saints a 23-8 lead seven minutes. Maryville was still leading 25-15 before the Saints made three consecutive 3-pointers to grab a 34-15 lead. Jeff Leeson hit a triple at the halftime buzzer as Maryville took a 42-26 lead at the break. The Saints hit 9-of-16 shots from 3-point range, good for 56.3 percent shooting.
 
Early in the second half, the Saints led 47-30 and scored six straight. Johnson scored consecutive baskets and Karson King tallied a layup for a 53-30 lead. The Saints eventually used a 13-2 run to put the game away. Maryville led by as many as 42 points to close out the contest.
 
Johnson shot 11-of-17 from the field and hit 6-of-8 from beyond the act en route to his 28-point performance. He also added seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Ben Volkman added a career-best 11 points and grabbed seven boards. King led the Saints with 11 rebounds, while Grant Sims handed out nine assists. The Saints hit half of their 66 shots and converted 14-of-29 from 3-point range.
 
The Saints improve to 3-8 on the season. Maryville is next in action Saturday, Dec. 10, as city-rival University of Missouri-St. Louis visits Moloney Arena for a 3 p.m. clash.
