Softball Splits DH at Lynn; Win Game One 7-5

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Boca Raton, Fla. - The Maryville softball team split a doubleheader against Lynn University Saturday afternoon in Boca Raton, Fla. The Saints won game one 7-5, and the Knights took game two 5-2.

In the opener, Ashley Marks doubled to left, and took third on Sydney Halleen's sac bunt. Starting pitcher Wendy Macias helped herself with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Lynn tied the game in the bottom of the second before the Saints erupted for five runs in the top of the third. Marks started the rally with a single, and Nikki Taylor drew a walk to put two runners aboard. Macias again delivered with an RBI double, and Bri Livingston plated two more runs with a single. Alex Flasch then jacked a two-run homer to center for a 6-1 Maryville lead. The Saints manufactured a run when Krystal Rock singled, moved to second after a bunt, and reached third after a sac bunt. Halleen's RBI grounder built a 7-1 lead. Lynn scored two runs in the fifth and continued the charge with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. However, Macias closed out the game for the complete-game win with eight strikeouts.

Game two only saw runs scored in two innings but the Knights earned the split with a five-run outburst in the fourth inning. Lynn used a three-run homer among three extra-base hits in the frame to take a 5-0 lead. The Saints answered with two runs in the top of the fifth. Flasch and Livingston singled to open the inning, and Taylor walked to load the bases. Kelsey Martin ripped a two-run double up the middle to cut the Maryville deficit to 5-2. The Saints stranded a runner at third in the sixth and missed out on a chance to trim the deficit even more. In their final at-bat, the Saint put the first two runners on. However, a hard-hit liner turned potential runs into a double play as Maryville was unable to score again.

The Saints are now 2-2 on the season and close their Florida trip with two games against Keiser University Sunday morning.
