Baseball Sweeps Lincoln; Catlett Hits Walk-Off Homer in Game Two

The Maryville baseball team ran its season-opening winning streak to three as the Saints swept two games from Lincoln Saturday afternoon in Joplin, Mo. The Saints won a 17-8 slugfest in game one, while Tyler Catlett capped a memorable game two when he smashed a walk-off two-run homer in a 5-3 win to sweep the doubleheader.

Every Maryville starter in game one had at least one hit and one run scored as the Saints pushed across 10 runs in the third inning to break open the game. Maryville pushed across single runs in the first and second inning before the Blue Tigers answered with five runs in the bottom of the second. The Saints then sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the third to roar past Lincoln. The Saints hit three home runs in the frame as Tyler Omlid had a solo blast, Yoonjae Nam drilled a two-run shot, and Connor Markell mashed a three-run homer. The Saints finished with 14 runs in the game to make Julian Langford a winner.

In game two, the game was tied 3-3 before Zach Ruckman started the game-winning sequence by drawing a walk. He stole second and took third on a ground out. Catlett then smashed the two-run homer over the wall in left center to walk the Saints off with the win. The Blue Tigers scored three runs in the top of the first, two unearned, to grab the early lead. Garrett Taylor and Catlett hit solo home runs in the third inning. In the fourth, Nam smacked Maryville's third solo homer in the game to forge a 3-3 tie and set up the late drama. Steven Reynolds went the distance and gave up just four hits to notch the victory.
