Baseball Beats #10 Quincy in Game One; Hawks Take Game Two

Maryville traveled to No. 10 Quincy and earned a split of a doubleheader Saturday. The Saints won an 11-10 slugfest in game one, while the offense was held in check with just four hits as the Hawks took game two 4-1.

Louis Niemerg drilled a two-run double in the top of the eighth for the winning run in the opener. Zack Rickman singled, and Dalton Schumer followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Niemerg then doubled down the line in left for an 11-9 lead. The Hawks pulled one run back in the bottom of the ninth and had a runner at second base before Robbie Gordon grabbed a comebacker to the mound to end the game.

The Saints grabbed the early led when Troy Payton singled and Ruckman walked. Schumer, who drove in four runs in the game, had a single that scored the first two runs of the game. Quincy scored in the bottom of the first but Niemerg smacked a solo home run for a 3-1 edge. The Saints added three more runs when Conner Markell scored an unearned run. Ruckman doubled to chase home another run, and Sean Murphy slashed an RBI single for a 6-1 advantage. The Hawks again pulled one run back but the Saints pushed their lead to 9-2. Quincy slowly came back and eventually tied the game at 9-9 to set up the late drama. Justin Laffleur pitched three innings to notch the win. Gordon recorded his second save in a week.

In game two, the Saints took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Niemerg doubled and moved to third on Garrett Taylor's sac bunt. Mitch Carriger delivered the RBI via a sac fly. The Hawks answered with three runs on four hits in the home half of the third. Both offenses were held in check for the next three innings as the Saints managed just one hit in that span. However, the Hakws sealed the win with three runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 6-1 decision.

The Saints are now 18-20 overall, 9-9 in the GLVC. The Hawks move their record to 28-10 overall, 12-6 in the GLVC.  The teams end the series with another twinbill Sunday starting at Noon in Quincy, Ill.
