The Maryville baseball team closed out a series at No. 10 Quincy by dropping both ends of a Sunday twinbill. The Saints were on the short end of score lines of 13-2 and 16-6.
In the opener, Quincy used two extra base hits that both scored two runs to take a 4-0 lead after one inning. The Saints answered with two runs in the top of the second. Dalton Schumer singled to start the inning. Sean Murphy followed with a single that was misplayed by QU as Schumer scored. With Murphy on third, Louis Niemerg lifted a sac fly to bring the Saints to 4-2. The Hawks added a single run in the second and pulled away with two more runs in the fourth and fifth inning. The Saints offense was held in check and only recorded four hits in the game.
The Saints grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning to game two. Quincy tied the game on a solo homer in the bottom of the second as the contest remained tied at 1-1 until the fifth. QU added a two-run shot and an RBI single built a 4-1 lead for the Hawks. The Saints battled back to forge a tie in the top of the seventh with a three-run burst.
Niemerg was hit by a pitch, and Tyler Omlid doubled to put two in scoring position. Garrett Taylor walked to load the bases before Niemerg scored on a wild pitch. Mitch Carriger, who had three hits in the game, doubled down the line in right to plate two runs for a 4-4 tie. Quincy scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to retake the lead but the Saints responded again. Schumer singled and Murphy walked to put two aboard and start the threat. Tyler Catlett put down a sac bunt as both runners moved into scoring position. Schumer then scored on a balk, and Omlid singled Murphy home to deadlock the game at 6-6. However, the Hawks soared with a 10-run outburst in the bottom of the eighth to seize control of the contest.
The Saints fall to 18-22 overall, 9-11 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks improve to 30-10 overall, 14-6 in the league. Maryville is next in action Wednesday, April 27, as it travels to Lebanon, Ill., to face McKendree in a non-conference game.
