Baseball Sweeps Drury 8-7 and 12-9 to Reach 20 Wins

Ballwin, Mo. - Maryville used timely hitting to sweep Drury on Friday afternoon by scores of 8-7 in 11 innings and 12-9 in the night cap Friday at Parkway South High School.

The Panthers started the opening game of the series with a double and scored their first run of the day on a fielder's choice to grab an early 1-0 lead after their opening at bats. But the Saints bounced right back in their half of the first with a Mitch Carriger walk. He moved to third on a Troy Payton single to put Saints on first and third with no outs for Zack Ruckman, who walked to load the bases. Dalton Schumer came through with a fielder's choice to score Carriger and tie the game up at 1-1.

The Panthers grabbed the lead in the top of the second on a Christian Mango homer, and they extended the lead in the fourth with a pair of runs on four hits to take a 4-1 lead. The Saints answered in the home half of the fourth as Tyler Catlett scored after getting hot by a pitch and advancing home on a single and a misplayed ball on the outfield to cut the Drury lead to 4-2, Connor Markell then smashed a single to left to plate Louis Niemerg from third to cut the deficit to 4-3 with no one out. Payton then came through with a three-run shot over the left field fence to give the Saints their first lead of the day at 6-4 after four innings.

Drury cut into the Saints lead with a solo shot to left, but relief pitcher Brandon Downey slammed the door on the Panther uprising in the eighth to keep the score at 6-5. Maryville added some insurance in the bottom part of the eighth as Catlett scored on a balk to push the Saints lead to 7-5.

The Panthers forced some bonus baseball as they scored a pair in the top of the ninth to tie things up at 7-7.  The score stayed the same until the eleventh inning when Payton singled to centerfield and stole second base. Ruckman came through with a single of his own to score Payton and give the Saints an 8-7 victory. Josh Bonds threw two innings in relive to garner his second win of the year for Maryville while Payton delivered with a pair of hits and three runs batted in.

Drury started the second game of the day by plating a plating a pair of runs on a Conner Wilson blast to take an early 2-0 lead in the first frame. The Panthers tacked on a pair of runs on four hits in the third to extend their lead to 4-0.

Maryville started a rally in the bottom of the third as they strung together three straight singles to load the bases with no one out to set-up Carriger to smash his eighth round tripper of the year with a grand slam to tie the game at 4-4 while Sean Murphy lined a double off the wall in right field to score Ruckman and give the Saints a 5-4 advantage. The Saints kept things going in the inning with three more runs, including a solo shot by Niemerg to extend the lead to 8-4.

The Panthers (14-30, 5-17 GLVC)  battled back in the top of the fourth with two runs of their own and they added another run in the fifth to cut the Saints lead to 8-7.

Maryville answered right back in the fifth as they plated four runs on three singles and took advantage of a Panther error to grab a 12-7 lead and seal the victory.
