Schumer Blasts Three Homers and Eight RBIs but Saints Drop Two at Missouri S&T

Rolla, Mo. - Dalton Schumer blasted three homers and drove in eight runs Saturday but could not prevent the Maryville baseball team from dropping both games of a doubleheader at Missouri S&T Saturday in Rolla. The Miners won an 11-9 slugfest in game one and rallied for a 7-4 decision in game two. The regular season wraps up Sunday with two games.

The teams traded four spots in the third inning. Mitch Carriger doubled to start the uprising, and Troy Payton followed with an RBI single to left. After Zack Ruckman walked, Schumer launched a three-run shot to left for a 4-0 Maryville lead. The Miners answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning and then took the lead with three scores in the fourth to continue a sequence of scoring in four straight innings. Ruckman singled to start the top of the fifth, and Schumer delivered another round tripper as his two-run homer pulled the Saints to 7-6.

The Miners tacked on a run in the fifth before the Saints tied the game at 8-all. Carriger walked and Payton doubled to put two runners into scoring position. Ruckman singled Carriger home to draw the Saints to within one run. Schumer hit a sac fly to left that drove in Payton for his sixth RBI of the game and forged an 8-8 tie. Missouri S&T took the lead on a solo homer in the seventh, but Sean Murphy tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right that allowed Payton to score. However, the Miners pushed across two runs in the bottom of the eighth for the winning runs. The Saints got the game-tying run on first when Carriger drew a two-out walk but the Saints did not score again in the contest.

In the second tilt, the Saints pushed across two runs in the top of the first inning. Payton singled before Schumer delivered again when he drilled a two-run shot to left to give the Saints the early edge. Maryville extended its lead to 4-0 in the top of the third. Carriger started the rally with a single and gave way to pinch runner Cody Klotz. Payton singled, and Ruckman put down a sac bunt that was misplayed for an error. Murphy delivered a two-run RBI single through the right side as Maryville doubled its lead. However, the Miners trimmed the Maryville lead to just 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth. The Miners completed the comeback in the bottom of the sixth with four runs on six hits, including a crucial two-run single by Adam Richter.
