Saints Baseball Closes Season with Two Losses at Missouri S&T

Rolla, Mo. - The Maryville baseball team closed out the 2016 season with a pair of losses at Missouri S&T Sunday in Rolla, Mo. The Saints scored the first two runs of game one but the Miners rallied for a 5-2 win. In the finale, Missouri S&T held off a charge by Maryville and recorded another 5-2 victory to claim the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division title.

#Cody Klotz opened the game with a double, and Troy Payton singled to put runners on the corners. The Saints pulled off a double steal to grab the early 1-0 lead. With two outs, Sean Murphy drilled an RBI single to center for a 2-0 lead. The Miners answered in the bottom of the first with a triple and a sac fly that tied the game 2-2.

The Saints had a chance to retake the lead in the fifth when Louis Niemerg walked, Tyler Omlid was hit by a pitch, and Garrett Taylor walked to load the bases. However, the Saints hit into an inning-ending double play allowing the Miners to escape. Missouri S&T tallied a run in the fifth and expanded the edge with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Omlid tripled to extend the game in the seventh but the Saints did not close the gap as the contest ended.

In game two, the Miners struck first with three runs on four hits. The Saints pulled one run back in the third when Evan Reister singled, and Austin Waugh and Mitch Carriger drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Daniel Covert's RBI grounder scored Reister with Maryville's first run. The Saints tallied another run in the fourth when Murphy and Niemerg lashed back-to-back doubles to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Miners manufactured a run in the fifth and added a solo tally in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-2 advantage. The Saints got the potential game-tying run to the plate in the final three innings but stranded two runners in each frame. In the ninth inning, Waugh walked and Josh Bonds pinch ran for him. Bonds took second and third on wild pitches, and Carriger earned a free pass. However, the game ended with runners at the corners as the Miners (34-15, 19-9) posted another 5-2 win.

The Saints end the 2016 season with a 21-27 record overall, 12-16 in the GLVC.
