Romeoville, Ill.
– Mary Barton scored a career-high 24 points and was 7-of-8 in 3-point shooting as the Maryville women's basketball team overcame an early deficit to upset #19 Lewis University 77-72 at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill., Saturday afternoon. The Saints win was the first over a ranked team since defeating No. 6 Drury 56-55 March 6, 2014, at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

The Saints fell behind from the onset of the game as Lewis opened by scoring the first five points en route to controlling the first quarter 24-17. The Flyers maintained the seven-point advantage until Barton tied the game at 29-29 with a triple from the left wing. The Saints grabbed their first lead of the day on a Abby Monis lay-in to cap a 9-0 run and give Maryville a 31-29 advantage with 4:11 remaining in the period. The teams traded baskets over the remainder of the half as the Flyers took a 35-34 lead to the halftime locker room. Barton finished the half with 12 points, while going 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.

The Saints took the lead for good on a Alex Wolf layup in the early stages of the third quarter, but the Flyers kept things interesting by cutting the Maryville lead to one point on many occasions. The Saints put the game out of reach with a Ali Ringering triple at the 4:42 mark of the fourth period to give Maryville its biggest lead of the night at 67-60.

The Flyers (13-4, 5-2 GLVC) were paced by Jessica Kelliher with 38 points on 18-of-19 shooting, while Jamie Johnson added 15 points in the loss. Stephanie Sherwood added a season-high 21 points in the Saints victory, while Wolf chipped in with 13 markers and grabbed seven boards. Ringering aided in the win with five assists.

Maryville (5-8, 1-5 GLVC) returns home to the Simon Center Monday, Jan. 16, as the Saints will take on cross-town rival University of Missouri-St. Louis. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
