St. Louis - The Maryville women's basketball team held city-rival University of Missouri-St. Louis scoreless for a 9:17 span and recorded a 62-50 victory Monday night at Moloney Arena.
Stephanie Sherwood matched her season high with 21 points and added seven rebounds to pace Maryville to its second straight win.

The Saints trailed the Tritons 18-12 at the 8:17 mark of the second quarter before clamping down on the visitors.
Ali Ringering started a 15-0 run with a 3-pointer, and Sherwood scored on a short jumper to give the Saints an 18-17 edge.
Mary Barton knocked down a triple, and Ringering scored another bucket.
Carly Frala finished a three-point play, and
Alex Wolf's layup was good for a 27-18 at halftime. The Saints forced UMSL into missing its last 12 shots of the quarter.

The Tritons finally scored exactly one minute into the third quarter and later cut the Maryville margin to 32-24. The Saints answered with six straight points. Sherwood scored all three baskets as Maryville built its largest lead of the contest at 40-26 with 4:05 left in the third.

The Saints kept the lead at 14 after an
Amanda Ponce three-point sequence before the Tritons chipped away at the margin. UMSL got as close as seven but Sherwood drilled a corner 3-pointer to restore a double-digit lead at 54-44. The Saints sealed the win by sinking all six free throws in the final minute.

Sherwood shot 7-of-11 from the field, 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and hit all four free throws as she scored 21 points for the second straight game. Ringering finished with 13 points, and Ponce chipped in 11 points, one short of her season best. The Saints shot 53.5 percent (23-of-43) while holding the Tritons to 38.2 percent.

Maryville improves to 6-8 overall, 2-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Tritons are 7-8 overall, 2-5 in the league. The Saints remain at home as they entertain Truman State Thursday, Jan. 19.
