Liberty, Mo. - The Maryville women's basketball team used a 10-0 run to open the third quarter and powered past William Jewell 56-47 Thursday night in Liberty, Mo. The Saints held the Cardinals to just 29.1 percent shooting, the lowest by a Maryville foe this season.
Down 19-17 at halftime, the Saints opened the third quarter with a burst. Amanda Ponce scored on a layup, and Mary Barton drilled a 3-pointer for a 22-19 Maryville lead. Barton tacked on her second straight triple, and another bucket by Ponce was good for a 27-19 lead. The Saints defense kept the Cardinals scoreless until the 6:43 mark of the quarter. WJC got as close as 29-26 before the Saints answered with a 7-1 run. Stephanie Sherwood hit two free throws, and after one charity toss by the Cardinals, Kayla Steward scored inside. Later, Steward made one free throw, and Ali Ringering's layup was good for a 36-27 cushion.
William Jewell began the fourth with a score before Barton drilled a triple to build a 40-31 edge. The Saints kept the lead but the Cardinals closed the gap to 44-42 with 3:35 to go. Alex Wolf scored on a layup, and Ponce added one free throw. After a defensive stop, Wolf tallied off a feed from Steward for a 49-42 edge with 1:56 remaining. Barton iced the game in the final minute by hitting seven of eight free throws.
Barton converted 4-of-5 from 3-point range amongst her 19 points and added four rebounds. Ponce pitched in 10 points, while Wolf claimed a team-high eight rebounds. Katie Finn led William Jewell (7-10 overall, 3-6 GLVC) with 15 points.
The Saints win their second straight and are now 8-9 on the year, 4-6 in the league. Maryville stays on the road for a tilt at Rockhurst Saturday afternoon.
