St. Louis - Despite 20 points from
Mary Barton, the Maryville women's basketball team dropped its Great Lakes Valley Conference home opener by a 65-59 margin to Saint Joseph's College Thursday evening in Moloney Arena.

After a close first half in which neither team led by more than six points, the visiting Pumas edged out to a 31-21 lead in the third quarter. The Saints were still down by seven before tying the game with a 7-0 run.
Abby Monis scored inside, and Barton knocked down a jumper.
Ali Ringering drilled a 3-pointer to forge a 38-38 tie. The Pumas scored on two free throws in the last minute to take a 40-38 lead into the fourth.

Barton tied the game at 40-all with a jumper. After the visitors hit a 3-pointer, Barton answered with a triple for the eighth tie of the game at 43-43. The Saints trailed by just one before the Pumas ran off an 8-0 burst to take command. The Saints chipped away at the deficit in the final minute and got as close as five but were unable to tie the game.

Barton hit 7-of-13 shots along with three 3-pointers en route to her 20 points. She led the team with five assists. Ringering chipped in 12 points, while
Stephanie Sherwood added 10. Hannah Albrecht led the Pumas (6-7, 2-1 GLVC) with 23 points.

The Saints fall to 4-6, 0-3 in the league. Maryville is back in action Saturday as it hosts Indianapolis in a 1 p.m. contest.
