Pontus Gitselov notched his first career hat trick to push the Maryville University men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over William Jewell Sunday afternoon at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Mo. With today's win, the Saints are off to their best start since the 1994 team opened the season with an 8-2-0 mark.
What Happened – Gitselov got the Saints started early in the first half as he took a pass from
Gavino Carranza and found the net just 46 seconds into the game to give Maryville a 1-0 lead. He then struck again in the fourth minute after taking a pass from
JD Sohn and slotted it into the left corner of the goal to stake the Saints to a 2-0 lead. Gitselov completed the hat trick in the 77
th minute after receiving a pass from
Nico Andrade and drilling into the back of the net to extend the lead to 3-0.
Inside the Numbers – Gitselov joins 26 other players that have scored three goals in a match.
Christian Kjaersgaard posted his fifth shutout of the season in today's victory.
How They Stand – Maryville improves to 8-2-0 overall and 6-2-0 in the GLVC while the Cardinals fell to 2-7-0 overall and 0-7-0 in the GLVC.
