St. Louis – The Maryville University men's soccer team battled the fifth-ranked Rockhurst University Hawks to a 1-1 draw Friday afternoon at Maryville Field. This is the first time that the Saints have not lost to the Hawks in eight tries.
What Happened – Pontus Gitselov once again got the Saints started in the first half as he was fouled in the 18-yard box and converted a penalty kick to give Maryville a 1-0 advantage in the 25th minute. The goal for Gitselov was his team-high sixth of the year. Rockhurst did not waste any time in the second half as they scored the equalizer in the 46
th minute to even the match at 1-1. The game turned into a defensive stalemate over the next 64 minutes as the two teams battled to the 1-1 draw.
Inside the Numbers – Rockhurst outshot the Saints 11-4 in the match while
Christian Kjaersgaard knocked away four shots on the afternoon. This is the third time that Maryville has earned a draw against a nationally-ranked foe.
How They Stand – Maryville is now 8-2-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the GLVC while the Hawks are 8-0-2 overall and 7-0-1 in the GLVC.
