Saints Score Early to Defeat UMSL 2-0

Normandy, Mo. – The Maryville University men's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes of the match and held on to defeat the University of Missouri – St. Louis 2-0 at Don Dallas Field in Normandy, Mo., Friday night. The Saints are now 5-0-2 in the last seven matches.
 
What Happened – Helgi Jonsson got the Saints going early as he scored his second goal of the season off a rebound to give Maryville a 1-0 lead in the third minute. Iwan Webster was credited with the assist on the goal. JD Sohn added an insurance goal in the 15th minute as he slotted a shot in to the left side of the net to give the Saints a 2-0 advantage. Maryville then turned to their defense as Christian Kjaersgaard earned his seventh clean sheet of the year.
 
Inside the Numbers – The Tritons out-shot the Saints 16-10 with Kjaersgaard only having to make one save on the evening. Webster's assist was his first point of the year, while Jonsson added his second helper on the campaign.
 
How They Stand – Maryville improves to 10-2-2 overall and 8-2-2 in league play, which is the best league record that the Saints have had since joining the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Tritons fall to 5-7-3 overall and 5-6-2 in the GLVC.
 
Up Next – Maryville wraps up their three-game road trip Sunday, Oct. 22, as the Saints travel to Lebanon, Ill. to take on McKendree University. The match is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
