Christian Kjaersgaard posted his 10
th shutout of the year as the third-seeded Maryville University men's soccer team defeated No. 6 University of Indianapolis 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championships.
What Happened – The Saints opened the scoring in the 29
th minute as
Vittorio Sasso drove a shot off the goalkeeper that then deflected off an UIndy defender into the goal to give Maryville a 1-0 lead. The Greyhounds had opportunities in the second stanza as they outshot Maryville 5-2, but none of those shots made it into the net.
Inside the Numbers – Kjaersgaard had three saves in the match to earn his 10
th clean sheet of the year. The shutout was also the 22
nd of his career, which sets a new school record.
Pontus Gitselov paced the Saints offense with three shots on the night.
How They Stand – The Saints improved to 13-3-2 on the season while the Greyhounds end their year at 13-6-1.
