Carriger and Schumer lead Saints to sweep of Saginaw Valley State

St. Louis - Dalton Schumer and Mitch Carriger paced a Maryville offense that pounded out 24 hits en route to a sweep of Saginaw Valley State University 7-2 and 16-6 Friday afternoon at Weber Field.

The Cardinals opened game one by starting a run in the first frame, but the Saints answered right back with a three run outburst. Zack Ruckman started the Saints off with a single and then stole second base. Daniel Covert moved Ruckman over to third with a single to left and then Carriger drilled another single to right to plate Ruckman and tie the game up at 1-1. Schumer blasted a shot over the wall in left center field to give the Maryville a 3-1 lead.

The Saints added insurance in the sixth inning as Ruckman drew a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Covert. After a Carriger walk, Maryville strung together three hits, including a Schumer double that plated a run and Garrett Taylor finished the Maryville inning with an RBI double to give Maryville a 7-1 lead.

Schumer finished the day going 2-for 3 with four runs batted in and he also scored a pair of runs while Carriger was a perfect 2-for-2 with an RBI.  AJ Dean twirled a five hitter in his first outing of the year to earn the win.

Maryville got off to a fast start in second game of the day as the Saints plated four runs in the first as Carriger lead the charge with a three-run double and scored on a Tyler Catlett ground out to take a 4-1 lead.

After Saginaw Valley pushed across a run in the top of the third, Maryville answered with four more runs in the home half of the inning. Cody Klotz opened the frame with a walk and scored on a Carriger double to take a 5-1 advantage. Louis Niemerg then pounded a single to left to drive in a pair runs and scored on a fielder's choice to give the Saints an 8-1 advantage. Maryville tacked on three runs in the sixth and four runs in the eighth to gain the sweep and improve to 4-5 on the season.

Carriger went 4-for-4, with a pair of doubles and a home run, while driving in five runs and scoring five runs as well. Connor Markell added four hits on the night while Catlett was 2-for-4 with four RBI's. Joey Lodes improved to 2-0 on the season by pitching 4.1 innings and striking out three Cardinals.

Maryville returns to the diamond Saturday afternoon at noon as the Saints finish their four game set with Saginaw Valley in a double-header at Weber Field.
