Box Score 2 Indianapolis, Ind. -
Nikki Taylor fired a three-hitter in the second game of the day to help the Maryville softball team to a split on the road at Great Lakes Valley Conference foe, the University of Indianapolis Sunday afternoon at Baummgartner Field in Indianapolis, Ind. The Saints dropped the first game of the day, 1-0 and then bounced back on the strength of four doubles in a 3-0 win over the Greyhounds in the nightcap.
Â
UIndy scored the only run of the game in the second inning as Lauren Honkomp held the Saints to four hits in the complete-game win. Maryville had an opportunity in the first inning to get things going as
Courtney Ferguson singled up the middle and then stole second base before Taylor drew a walk to put runners at first and second. The Greyhounds forced a ground out to get out of the inning and did not allow a Saints runner past first base the rest of the way.
Â
Sheridon Sprague gave up a run on four hits with a strikeout as she fell to 3-10 on the season.
Casey Ward paced the Saints at the plate with two of the Maryville four hits in the contest.
Â
The nightcap was scoreless until the fourth inning with Maryville erupting for all the runs that they would need. Taylor helped her own cause with a double to open the frame and after a pop out to third, Ward and Sprague hit back-to-back doubles to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.
Jaclyn Pasakarnis came in to pinch hit and drilled the Saints fourth double of the inning to score Sprague and give Maryville a 3-0 advantage. Taylor held the Greyhounds at bay by giving up two hits over the final four innings to earn the Saints the series split.
Â
Taylor improved to 13-9 on the year with the complete-game win and struck out a pair of UIndy batters. Taylor also helped herself at the plate by going 1-for-2 with a run scored while Ward and Pasakarnis also were 1-for-2 in the contest as Maryville improved to 22-24 and 12-14 in conference play.
Â
Maryville returns home for the final weekend of the regular season as the Saints welcome Bellarmine University to Weber Field for a doubleheader set to begin at noon.
