Summary
The Maryville University volleyball team posted its first victory of the season by rallying for a thrilling five-set victory over Southern Indiana. After dropping the first two sets, the Saints came all the way back for a 19-25, 12-25, 27-25, 25-16, 15-13 triumph in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener.
 
How it Happened
After losing the first two sets, set three was tied at 25-25. The Saints forced two Southern Indiana errors to take the set and extend the match.
 
In set four, the Saints led 8-7 but scored three straight to take control. Cassidy Arndt had a kill, and USI committed an error. Maggie Murphy served an ace for an 11-7 lead. The Saints put the set away with four straight points to force a fifth set.
 
In the decisive fifth set, the match was tied at 3-3 before the Saints scored four straight. Allison Lakin notched a kill, and USI committed a ball handling error. Lakin then pounded down two straight kills for a 7-3 edge. Southern Indiana slowly rallied and eventually took an 11-10 advantage. Arndt tied the set, and Katie Verseman's kill gave Maryville the lead. The Saints led 14-11 before the Screaming Eagles tallied two straight. At match point, Verseman put down a ball to cap the Maryville rally.
 
The Saints hit a sparking .417 in the final set with 10 kills, one error on 21 attempts.

The win by Maryville after losing the first two sets was the first since digging out of an 0-2 deficit against East Central in Sept. 13, 2013.

The victory is the first for head coach Nikki Naccarato in her Maryville tenure.
