Helmut Florencia scored with just over a minute remaining to push the 19
th-ranked Maryville University men's soccer team to a 2-1 in double overtime victory over Lewis University Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium in Romeoville, Ill.
What Happened – The Flyers opened the scoring in the first half with a goal in the 4
th minute to grab a 1-0 lead. The score stayed that way until the 78
th minute when
Pontus Gitselov converted a volley from Florencia to tie the match at 1-1. Florencia scored the game winner in the 109th minute on a cross from
JD Sohn that found the back of the net to give Maryville the win.
Inside the Numbers – The goal for Gitselov was his second of the year while Florencia's game winner was his third of the season. Maryville outshot the Flyers 6-2 in two overtime sessions.
How they stand – Maryville improves to 5-1-0 and 3-1-0 in the Great Lake Valley Conference while the Flyers fall to 3-3-0 and 2-2-0 in the GLVC.
