Erik Schafer picked up his first goal of the year to aid the Maryville University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Quincy University Sunday afternoon at Maryville Field.
What Happened – Maryville opened the scoring in the 16
th minute as
JD Sohn found the net on a breakaway to give the Saints an early 1-0 advantage. Schafer added what proved to be the game winner in the 63
rd minute as he knocked a header into the goal off a free kick from
Gavino Carranza to stake the Saints to a 2-0 lead. The Hawks scored their only goal of the match on a penalty kick in the 70
th minute as the Saints defense held Quincy to only two shots over the last 20 minutes of action.
Inside the Numbers – The Saints outshot Quincy 11-9 in the match with
Helgi Jonsson having three of those chances. Jonsson was also credited with an assist on the Sohn goal in the first half.
How they stand – Maryville improved to 6-2-0 and 4-2-0 in the Great Lake Valley Conference while the Hawks fell to 3-4-0 and 2-3-0 in the GLVC.
Up Next – Maryville heads to Kirksville, Mo., Friday, Sept. 29, to take on Truman State. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
